Nacala Corridor Power Project
Mozambique

Mozambique is home to three principal commercial ports: Maputo, Beira, and Nacala. Among these, Nacala Port ranks as the third most active in cargo handling. It is characterized by impressive depths of 14 meters and is celebrated as one of the premier natural harbors in southeastern Africa. Its strategic location within the Indian Ocean trade network has led to an increase in interest and activity.
The Nacala Corridor begins at Nacala Port, which is rich in mineral and agricultural resources, and is expected to experience a tenfold increase in cargo volume by 2030 compared to 2011 levels. However, despite this promising outlook, the corridor faces significant challenges, including spatial constraints and outdated infrastructure at Nacala Port, which has not undergone major renovations in four decades since its inception. As a result, the port is ill-equipped to handle the anticipated rise in cargo volume effectively. Additionally, there are concerns regarding inefficient cargo handling procedures and safety measures.

Current situation / Background:

  • The Nacala Corridor Area is anticipated to experience a significant rise in power demand due to rapid economic growth and an increasing population. Specifically, this demand is expected to escalate from 158 MW in 2013 to 518 MW by 2021, resulting in an anticipated shortfall of approximately 400 MW.

  • The power supply system in the area is inefficient and suffers from shortages, which adversely impacts business operations and results in low factory operational rates.

Duration:

2019 ~2025
UrbanVex experts are engaged in multiple facets of the execution of this undeniably significant project, which includes:
  • Advisory services regarding planning matters
  • Coordination of the procurement of generating and auxiliary machinery
  • Preparation and revision of the project risk assessment matrix
  • Strategic planning of infrastructure
  • Development of a logistics framework for port infrastructure and transportation systems
  • Conducting feasibility analyses for energy infrastructure facilities
  • Identification and provision of equipment for diverse project contractors

Main objectives:

Establish a gas-powered electricity generation facility to enhance the availability of electrical power in the area.

Project customer:

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM).

Description:

The establishment of a gas-powered electricity generation facility along the Nacala Corridor is intended to provide electrical power to the neighboring municipalities.

Current stage:

Construction phase.

Expected results:

The augmentation of power generation capacity provides a consistent electricity supply to both local communities and industrial sectors.
Nacala’s proximity to international markets is noteworthy. It functions as a deep-sea port, especially now that the government has finalized its rehabilitation and modernization efforts
